Even the most stylish photo or video can lose quality after uploading to Instagram. Blurry images, pixels, poor detail — all of this ruins the impression of your content. In this guide, the MULI team has gathered proven tips to help you preserve the sharpness, color, and quality of your photo and video content at the highest level.

1. Photo Format and Resolution for Instagram

To keep your photos sharp after publishing:

  • Use the 3:4 format with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels — this is the format Instagram compresses least aggressively.
  • 1:1 formats or horizontal (e.g., 16:9) may be more heavily compressed, especially on mobile.
  • Save photos in JPEG with high quality or HEIF — the latter achieves higher sharpness at a smaller file size.

2. How to Preserve Video Quality for Instagram Stories and Reels

To make your Stories or Reels look professional:

  • Shoot in 9:16 format (portrait orientation) — it's perfect for full-screen viewing.
  • Use these settings:
    • 4K resolution
    • 60 frames per second (fps) for smooth motion

On iPhone you can enable this here:
Settings ➡️ Camera ➡️ Record Video ➡️ 4K/60fps

3. How to Enable High-Quality Uploads in Instagram

To prevent Instagram from reducing your content quality during upload:

  • Open Instagram
  • Go to the menu (three lines in the top right)
  • Settings and activity ➡️ Media quality
  • Enable the "Upload at highest quality" option

This feature may be hidden if you haven't updated the app — check the App Store.

Additional Tips: How Not to Lose Quality When Publishing

  • Edit your content in third-party apps, not in Instagram.
Instagram filters can reduce detail and alter colors.
We recommend: MULI for photos, VN / CapCut for videos.
  • Upload content over Wi-Fi.
A slow mobile connection can cause additional compression.
  • Check the final version before publishing.
If the photo/video already looks blurry in your gallery — it won't get better on Instagram.
